Abstract: the authors couple the DEM (Discrete Element Method) model of Bell et al. 2005 with the SPH approach of Mueller et al. 2003 to handle wetting,... of sand and granular material. Each granular particle has a wetting factor. Once a threshold is exceeded, the appropriate SPH particle is deleted to model the fluid filling the holes in the granular pile. For coupling granular particles are handled as fluid particles with constant density in case of collision with an SPH particle.
